Jimmy Buffett’s star-studded show to support those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been postponed over fears a tropical storm brewing off the coast could put gig-goers in danger.
The veteran musician and his Coral Reefer Band, along with Kenny Chesney, Sonny Landreth, the Zac Brown Band, Jesse Winchester and Allen Toussaint, were set to perform on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama on 1 July (10).
But the gig has been pushed back by 10 days, to 11 July (10), amid fears Tropical Storm Alex will cause high tides and rough waves which could destabilise the beach-front stage.
Buffett’s sister, Lucy, says, “It has been determined that it is absolutely unsafe to have that stage in that location on 1 July. So that event has been postponed. It’s tides and currents and things that we have no control over.”
Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft adds, “This is a disappointment, obviously, but Jimmy Buffett is still coming to the Gulf Coast on July 11, and tickets will be honored at that time.
“Nobody hates this more than I do, but I guess, as the song says, it’s hard to reason with hurricane season. For those going anyway, thank you… For the rest of you, we will see you (on) July 11.”
Buffett organized the event to show his support for the local businesses affected by the massive oil slick, which has been drifting ashore on the Gulf Coast since a BP rig ruptured in April (10).
It is unclear whether the other stars due to perform on 1 July will attend the re-scheduled show on 11 July.
