Michael Douglas is breathing a sigh of "relief" now his son Cameron’s legal troubles are over – because his sentencing on drug charges has ended a long and stressful year for his family.
Actor Cameron Douglas, 31, was handed a five-year prison term last month (Apr10) after pleading guilty to charges of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute and one count of cocaine possession.
The Wall Street star has stood by his son since his arrest last summer (09) following a raid on his hotel room in New York and recently admitted he was grateful his son was busted by authorities – because his time behind bars has forced him into a life of sobriety.
Douglas, Sr. said, “My son has not been sober for this length of time since he was 13 years old. So he was going to be dead or somebody was gonna kill him, and I think he has a chance to start a new life and he knows that.”
The Hollywood actor insists Cameron is doing “well” – and he hopes his son will use his prison time to reflect on his life.
He tells WENN, “He is doing as well as can be expected. He has been sentenced so it now is a bit of a relief. It has been a long year dealing with it. Life goes on and hopefully he’ll be a better person.”
