Michael Douglas has praised the judge overseeing his son’s court case for handing Cameron a five-year prison sentence – calling the punishment "adequate".
The 31 year old faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to one count of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of cocaine in January (10).
Douglas, along with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his father Kirk, wrote letters to Federal Judge Richard Berman, urging him to be lenient.
Their pleas appeared to have been answered when Cameron was handed a five-year sentence last month (Apr10), and Douglas is convinced Judge Berman made the right decision.
He tells America’s Today show, “Well, I think any person can understand writing letters for leniency. Everybody does it. I think the court recognised his drug addiction as well as the crime that he committed. It’s an adequate, I think, amount of time for anybody to spend in jail.”
