Rap newcomer Drake has another hip-hop superstar to turn to while his mentor Lil Wayne serves time in prison – Jay-Z has been providing him with words of advice too.
The Lollipop hitmaker took Drake under his wing and signed him to his Young Money record label last year (09), but earlier this month (Mar10) he was sentenced to 12 months behind bars for weapons charges.
But Drake has found another mentor in Jay-Z after working with the Empire State of Mind star on the icon’s The Blueprint 3 album and teaming up for a collaboration for his own upcoming debut, Thank Me Later.
He tells MTV News, “He definitely has guided me a lot, as far as his words and his advice. We have a real funny rapport. I always enjoy my conversations with Jay. It’s good.
“When Jay says something, it’s different from anyone else. It just means that much more. Jay just has this aura about him. It’s like, ‘That’s why you’re Jay-Z.’ For a guy like me who grew up wanting to be Jay-Z, it’s influential – it’s very, very influential. We have great conversations. Just life. I’m not (the) type of character that you have to sit down and instruct. I’m pretty aware of myself and how to go through this whole process (music business). The conversations are just funny and good and settles my mind.”
