Kerry Washington and James Spader’s Broadway play Race has been deemed a huge success – theater bosses have recouped their $2.5 million production costs just four months after it opened.
The controversial David Mamet play, about a pair of lawyers asked to defend a white man accused of raping a black woman, opened in New York last December (09). The production also stars David Alan Grier and Richard Thomas.
And the show has been such a big hit with New York theater fans, producers have already earned back their multi-million dollar investment, according to producer Jeffrey Richards.
Race joins a small group of Broadway plays that have defied the odds of a worldwide financial crisis to become financial successes this season – including Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig’s drama, A Steady Rain.
Race is scheduled to end its limited engagement on 13 June (10).
