Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears fears the international music festival circuit is on the brink of collapse as so many of the events have fallen victim to the recession.
The pop band is due to appear at numerous open-air gigs in Europe over the summer (10), including shows in Slovakia, Italy and Germany.
But many of their slots have now been cancelled, including a performance at the Hultsfred festival in Sweden on 7 July (10) which was scrapped after organisers filed for bankruptcy.
And Shears worries the financial troubles facing festivals could have worrying repercussions for the music industry.
He tells Britain’s Daily Star, “People are cancelling tours all over the place. It’s a very expensive thing to get even a well-known band on the road. We were supposed to be really busy this summer but festivals keep going under.
“Hultsfred in Sweden just went bankrupt, as did Norway’s Kristiansand. It’s scary because for a while it seemed live music was a safe buck for the industry, but not any more.”
