Brosnan: ‘Tomorrow Never Dies Was Not Fun’

Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan had tired of movie superspy James Bond during the making of his second 007 adventure, Tomorrow Never Dies, and now reveals promoting the film was difficult – because he didn’t like it.

The suave star, who played Bond in four films, admits he had a great time shooting GoldenEye, but knew the follow-up wasn’t as good.

He tells Venice magazine, “I remember starting the first day on that film in an aircraft, flying a jet… and it was 102 degrees, and I’m wearing a helmet and sweater, and then I’m being strangled over and over again, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this bloody character is going to kill me.’

“The press tour for that film was 22 countries. When I did it I knew the movie wasn’t up to speed; it wasn’t as good as GoldenEye and you have to bang the drum loudly to get the attention.”

Brosnan came to the end of his run as 007 after 2002’s Die Another Day. He was replaced by British actor Daniel Craig.

Looking back, the Irishman admits he always struggled as the movie spy: “I never felt that I really nailed it.”

Race Is A Broadway Success

Actress Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington and James Spader’s Broadway play Race has been deemed a huge success – theater bosses have recouped their $2.5 million production costs just four months after it opened.

The controversial David Mamet play, about a pair of lawyers asked to defend a white man accused of raping a black woman, opened in New York last December (09). The production also stars David Alan Grier and Richard Thomas.

And the show has been such a big hit with New York theater fans, producers have already earned back their multi-million dollar investment, according to producer Jeffrey Richards.

Race joins a small group of Broadway plays that have defied the odds of a worldwide financial crisis to become financial successes this season – including Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig’s drama, A Steady Rain.

Race is scheduled to end its limited engagement on 13 June (10).

New Bond Film Suspended Indefinitely

Daniel Craig

The next instalment in the James Bond franchise has been suspended indefinitely due to the uncertainty over the future of movie studio MGM.

Daniel Craig was scheduled to reprise the 007 role for a third time in the 23rd Bond movie, which was scheduled for a 2011 or 2012 release date.

But filming has been thrown into chaos after the sale of famed media company MGM. The firm was put up for sale last year (09) after falling millions of dollars in debt.

Producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have released a joint statement saying, “Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on Bond 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of Bond 23.”

Craig adds, “I have every confidence in Barbara and Michael’s decision and look forward to production resuming as quickly as possible.”

Pinto: ‘I’m Not Beautiful Enough To Be A Bond Girl’

Freida Pinto

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto is "flattered" by rumors linking her to a role in the new 007 movie – but insists she’s not "beautiful" enough to play a Bond girl.

Pinto was recently reported to have signed up to play Daniel Craig’s love interest in the next James Bond blockbuster, which will be directed by Sam Mendes.

A representative for the actress dismissed the rumors, confirming Pinto has “not been approached” by Bond bosses.

And the Indian beauty, 25, is convinced she would be the wrong choice for a role in the superspy franchise.

She tells Britain’s OK! magazine, “It was very flattering. I don’t know if I would have done it. I’m too young to be a Bond girl and you need someone more mature and beautiful than me.”

Brosnan Couldn’t Compete With Damon In Spy Stakes

Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan knew his days as Bond were numbered after Matt Damon became the most popular spy at the box office through his Bourne franchise.

The Irish actor rejuvenated the 007 series in the mid-’90s with his debut in the British spy franchise’s Goldeneye. He went on to play the suave secret agent in a further three films.

But following the release of Paul Greengrass’ 2002 movie The Bourne Identity, starring Damon as Jason Bourne, Brosnan knew cinema-goers were ready for a new style of spy thriller.

He spent a boozy night with director Quentin Tarantino discussing how to bring Casino Royale to the big screen – but Bond bosses decided to go with Daniel Craig for the 2006 film instead.

Brosnan tells Empire magazine, “That wasn’t meant to be. But we (Brosnan and Tarantino) had a great night. I could hardly walk. I had to call a driver up because I could just about put one foot in front of the other. He walked out of the door and then got into his Pussymobile and drove away. He’s a champion lad, Quentin… Yeah, it wasn’t meant to be for him, or for me.

“Once Paul Greengrass let Matt Damon out of the door in such an epic way, the spy genre turned on its head and my time was done. Because then you have a younger man there, and how are you going to move forward? And they (Bond bosses) couldn’t. If they were to do Casino Royale, they couldn’t do it with me. Choices were made. The decisions were drawn in the sand – albeit a little late in the day.”
