Bridges Relied On Downey, Jr. On Iron Man Set

Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges relied on the improvisation skills of Robert Downey, Jr. while shooting Iron Man – because he often arrived on-set not knowing his lines.

The Oscar winner, who played Tony Stark’s business partner-turned-arch-rival Obadiah Stane in the 2008 film, only signed up because he was a huge fan of Downey Jr. and the movie’s director Jon Favreau.

And Bridges soon realized when filming began he had a good team on his side – admitting the pair often had to help him when he got lost during a scene.

He tells Total Film magazine, “We would show up sometimes and we had this big scene to shoot and we wouldn’t know what we were going to say. We were lucky to have Favreau and Downey. Both of them are master improvisers. It came off great.”

Iron Man 2 Blasts To Top Of Box Office

Robert Downey Jr.

Iron Man 2 has rocketed to the top of the box office chart to score the fifth biggest opening weekend in history with a powerful $133.6 million.

The sequel to the 2008 hit, starring Robert Downey, Jr. as the comic book superhero, dominated movie theatres this weekend (07-09May10) as the nation celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday (09May10).

The bumper figures overshadowed the takings of the original Iron Man, which grossed $98.6 million when it debuted in 2008.

However the follow-up failed to match the record set by The Dark Knight in 2008, which holds the title for the biggest opening weekend ever at the box office with $158.4 million. Iron Man 2 sits behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in the record books – the Disney adventure is fourth on the list after taking $135.6 million upon its release in 2006.

Iron Man 2’s profits takes the Jon Favreau movie’s worldwide total to over $327 million.

Last week’s most popular film, a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, fell to second place with $9.1 million, while animated hit How to Train Your Dragon held strong at three with $6.7 million, more than a month after its release.

Rourke Played Music To Prepare For Iron Man Scenes

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke insisted on his own soundtrack for scenes in Iron Man 2 – because Amy Winehouse’s Rehab and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley helped him get into character as Russian villain Whiplash.

The Wrestler star had a huge sound system set up for his dramatic scenes – and blasted his favorite tunes at his co-stars.

Moviemaker Jon Favreau tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, “Mickey has his process, man. He wants the music loud. We’d get these big speakers… and there were a handful of songs he would want played.

“In that scene when he’s walking down the racetrack with the whips out and people are running and screaming and there’s tyres on fire, Rehab was blasting.”

Iron Man Robert Downey, Jr. wasn’t impressed with all the noise: “I always thought, like, ‘Why is he coming at me with, ‘They tried to make me go to rehab?’

“If I ever hear that Gnarls Barkley song again, it’ll be too soon.”

DJ AM To Appear In Iron Man 2

Adam Goldstein aka DJ AM

Tragic DJ Adam Goldstein will make an appearance in the new Iron Man sequel – eight months after he died from an accidental drug overdose (Aug09).

Director Jon Favreau asked the late club icon, aka DJ AM, to appear at a party in the film and even namechecked him in the script – Robert Downey, Jr.’s Iron Man character says, “Adam, I need a fat beat.”

And rather than scrap the scene following Goldstein’s death, Favreau asked the DJ’s family if he could pay a movie tribute to the clubber.

The filmmaker says, “I was just a fan of his, just an admirer of his work, and it (shoot) was supposed to be a one-day bit, but Robert took a real shine to him, as we all did. His energy was amazing, he was such a inspiring guy and there was a lot of depth to him and this positive energy.

“He ended up staying on with us for about a week and it was just great, we set up this turntable and between takes he would give me pointers.”

The film will also feature a dedication to DJ AM during the end credits, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Favreau tells the publication, “When he passed it was very difficult for a lot of us. Our heart goes out to his family and friends and we hope what we’ve done is pleasing to them and to the many, many people who held Adam in high regard.”

Iron Man 2 World Premiere Moved From London To L.A.

Robert Downey Jr.

The world premiere of Iron Man 2 has become the first major Hollywood casualty of the Icelandic volcano eruption – studio bosses have switched the movie’s debut from London to Los Angeles.

The cast of the action sequel, led by American stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson, was expected to fly to the U.K. for the big opening on 26 April (10).

But, with a heavy cloud of volcanic ash hovering over Europe and threatening to ground further flights in and out of the continent, executives at Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have decided to relocate the world premiere to Los Angeles – to ensure the stars’ attendance.

However, British event organisers still hope to press ahead with plans for a special screening of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 on the original premiere date as the actors take to the red carpet in Hollywood.

The volcanic dust has caused travel chaos for six million passengers following the cancellation of more than 63,000 flights over the past week (begs12Apr10), costing airlines $200 million a day.
