Nichols Picks Up Afi Honor

Moviemaker Mike Nichols was the focus of a star-studded ceremony in California on Thursday night (10Jun10) as he picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.

Actors including Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson, Julia Roberts and Helen Mirren turned out to honor The Graduate director at the event, held at the Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City.

The 78-year-old Oscar-winner was presented with the coveted prize by Meryl Streep, and admitted he was deeply honored by the tribute, saying, “Something like this, you look back and you remember everything that happened, all the people and all the fun you had and all the laughs you had… it’s a nice way to make a living.”

Last year’s winner of the award, Michael Douglas, later joked about the event, telling Entertainment Tonight, “The American Film Institute in particular, when you look at the roster of people you’re surrounded with, obviously they set the bar kind of low last year. Now we’re getting back up to where it should be: someone like Mike Nichols.”

Roberts’ Film Wins Ratings Appeal

Movie executives at Columbia Pictures are celebrating after winning a film classification battle over Julia Roberts’ new movie Eat, Pray, Love.

Officials at America’s Classification and Rating Appeals Board have overturned the R rating given to the film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel and the movie will now hit cinemas with a less restrictive PG-13 rating.

The film was originally handed an R for its strong language, prompting studio heads and director Ryan Murphy to appeal the decision.

And, in a rare turnaround, the appeals board bosses agreed to drop the rating without asking for changes to the film, which will be released in August (10).

Aniston To Scream With Cox

Jennifer Aniston will reunite with her Friends co-star Courteney Cox in the upcoming Scream sequel.

Cox met her husband David Arquette on the set of the 1996 original and the pair has been a regular item in the Wes Craven horror films ever since.

They have both signed on to return for a fourth installment of the franchise, which begins shooting later this year (10) – and Cox has persuaded Aniston to join in the fun.

A source tells Star magazine, “Scream has always been an important part of Courteney’s life, and she wanted Jennifer to be a part of the production.”

But Aniston’s Scream appearance will be a short one – she will be the masked killer’s first victim when her character is murdered in the opening sequence.

Neve Campbell, the lead in the 1996 movie, has also agreed to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott for a fourth outing. Julia Roberts’ niece Emma Roberts has also joined the cast.

Cooper And Rudd Laugh At Their Lucky Careers

Bradley Cooper and his pal Paul Rudd couldn’t believe their luck when they landed Broadway roles opposite Julia Roberts – because they are the antithesis of stereotypical actors.

The pair worked with the Pretty Woman actress on the 2006 New York production of Richard Greenberg’s Three Days of Rain, and were stunned at how far they had come since their days as relative unknowns in cult comedy Wet Hot American Summer – Cooper’s debut film.

And the Hangover star insists the strangest part of the pair becoming professional actors was the fact they didn’t behave like Hollywood celebrities – admitting they still laugh at their own bodily functions.

He tells Details magazine, “We would sit around laughing saying if we had had a crystal ball when we were shooting Wet Hot American Summer and it had told us we were going to be the two guys opposite Julia Roberts in a play, we would have thought that was crazy.

“Movie stars used to be dashing, masculine, and mysterious and we’re the kind of guys that laugh at our own farts.”

Roberts Trained For Half-Marathon On Movie Set

Movie star Julia Roberts made the most of her downtime while making new movie Eat, Pray, Love – by training for a half-marathon.

The Pretty Woman star reveals her husband Danny Moder persuaded her to test herself by taking on the 13.5-mile (21.7-kilometre) charity run in California in December (09) once filming on the epic movie wrapped and Roberts was back in America five months after travelling through India, Italy and Bali.

And she admits that training in the heat of India, Bali and an Italian summer gave her an advantage.

She says, “I trained a lot while I was doing the movie and it was so hot there, I think it was to my advantage that I had trained under such dire circumstances.”

Roberts admits she had a very special reason to take part in the marathon: “I just wanted to show my kids that the power of a female body is more than just giving birth, which is a great power… and my kids were out there, they made me a sign.”

Stars’ Haute Couture Gowns Auctioned Off For Haiti

Gowns donated by Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Julia Roberts and Demi Moore helped to raise more than $330,000 for the Haiti relief effort at a Cannes Film Festival gala in France on Wednesday (19May10).

Cruz and her boyfriend Javier Bardem attended the Chopard-sponsored auction on behalf of pal Sean Penn, whose charity benefited from the cash.

The actress initiated the auction of haute couture dresses worn by different stars to prestigious events like the Oscars and the Cannes Film Festival.

Penn was unable to attend the gala as he was fundraising for Haiti in Washington, D.C.
